After your baby is born his very first cries are like music to your ears because it’s the very first sound that you’ve ever heard him make. Some newborns cry more than others and sometimes there is no real reason for it. There is a specific stage of crying that some babies experience known as purple crying. This can cause some major stress and anxiety for parents. The good news is that it is totally normal. The bad news is that there’s a good chance it will get worse before it gets better.
If your little one just won’t stop crying your first instinct is that something is wrong. Just like any normal parent, you take him to the doctor and they run all kinds of tests to try to find something that could result in so much sadness. Let’s say all the results come back normal and he is still crying all the time. Well, chances are your little one is going through the stage of purple crying. There is no specific reason that babies go through this. It is just something that is completely normal for some newborns. He is not in pain, not frustrated and doesn’t want anything specific. The only thing you can really do is try your best to comfort him, and sometimes that doesn’t really do anything.
This stage of crying normally happens around 2 months. The reason that it is called purple crying is because of the color that your newborn’s face turns when they cry a lot. Now, when you hear a baby cry a lot it just breaks your heart, but when your baby cry a lot it makes you feel like you’ve done something terribly wrong. The most important thing to remember is that it is completely normal and you are doing everything right! It is really just a waiting game. Until he grows out of this stage there is only so much you can do.
First, you could try swaddling your little bug is a cozy blanket. This can help him feel nice and secure. Second, you can try gently rubbing his back. It can help him digest food better and feel more relaxed. Next, try holding him in your arms, walking, rocking or swaying him. This can help remind him of the time that he was in your tummy to help him feel more at ease. You could even try a white noise machine or a fan to help calm him down. Lastly, sucking on something can help soothe his cries, so try a pacifier. If none of these things work don’t worry, because about 10 percent of the time nothing will work to help him calm down.
If you start to get frustrated, as any parents would be, there is absolutely no harm in setting him down in his crib for 5 minutes to take a little break. Like I said before, sometimes there is just nothing you can do for him and that is okay!
The crying might seem endless when you are going through it, but always try to remember that there is a light at the end of the tunnel. Normally around 3-5 months you little one will start to cry less and less.
